We the members of Lakeside Baptist Church are people on a journey of faith who seek to deal with questions of life openly and honestly. Our faith is in God who is revealed to us in Jesus Christ and who sustains us by the Hold Spirit. We believe that the quality of our lives is enhanced by our commitment to Jesus Christ. Through our worship, our Christian education, and our mission outreach, we seek to help persons discover who they are and explore their faith, rather than prescribe what they should believe. We are a church committed to the historic Baptist principles of the competence of the individual before God and the autonomy of each congregation to shape its own life and mission, call its own leadership, and ordain whom it perceives as gifted for the ministry. We seek to demonstrate an ecumenical and inclusive spirit and we welcome into our membership persons from other Christian denominations, affirming their baptism and their Christian experience. We encourage our members to express their Christian faith by an active citizenship and by becoming involved in the many community organizations that convey God's love to others. In order to reach beyond our community, we cooperate with The Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the Alliance of Baptist and we support selected ministries of other Baptist groups. We believe that our attempt to be followers of Jesus Christ transcends denominational connection and in that spirit we welcome opportunities for cooperation with other groups in the demonstration of God's love for all persons. (Adopted 1993; Revised 2003, 2006) Members of Lakeside are persons on journey of faith who search the questions of life openly and honestly. We believe that the quality of life is enhanced by our commitment to Jesus Christ and is best lived in service to others. We are a church committed to the historic Baptist principles of the competence of the individual before God and the autonomy of each congregation to shape its own life and mission, call its own leadership, and ordain whom it perceives as gifted for the ministry. Lakeside is proud of its Baptist heritage, and we are mindful of the sacrifices that were made to produce and maintain that heritage. While Baptist traditions have shaped who we are, they have not completely defined us. We often borrow traditions from our sister churches and from Christian practices handed down through the ages. In this way, we are unfettered by denominational labels and are often known in our community simply as “ Lakeside ”. Our congregation is comprised of people from varied backgrounds who share their journey of faith through worship, education, community service and the experienced love of Jesus Christ. We receive members by affirmation of their faith or by transfer from other Christian churches. We honor the previous baptism of persons coming from other Christian denominations. To the top In Rocky Mount in the mid-1950's the thundering trains of the Atlantic Coast Line snaked their way through the middle of our town. The chant of the tobacco auctioneer punctuated the hot summer days. Sunset Avenue was still a two-way street and the western city limits extended only to the Tar River . “Downtown” was still the center of business and the site of the city's churches. Young couples who had come back home after World War II and now had young families sensed a need for churches in the communities where they lived. Such as the setting when ,on February 20, 1955, a group of fifteen persons met to discuss the need for a Baptist church on what was described as the “western edge” of Rocky Mount. After only six weeks as a mission, Lakeside Baptist Church was constituted on June 5, 1955 with 252 charter members. Additional property was purchased lot by lot until the entire block was acquired. In 1968 the Youth Building was erected. In 1979 a new educational building, providing facilities for adult education and preschool children, was completed. Our fortieth year saw several renovations with the creation of a new and enlarged Narthex, the addition of a courtyard and the construction of a music suite for choir and handbells. During its fifty-two year history, Lakeside has been served by three ministers. Rev. Clarence E. Godwin served the church from 1955-1965. Dr. Gaylord Lehman was senior minister from 1966 until his retirement in 1998. Dr. Jody C. Wright has served Lakeside as senior minister since the 1998. To the top
